It would be the first of many miracles. Turning water into wine for a wedding celebration. First, we see that our Savior was celebrating. Second, we notice that His mother’s request did not get pushed aside. He protested a bit, but went ahead and took care of the need for wine. The water was turned to wine. The best of wine near the end of the celebration. It was the custom to serve your best first and then bring out the poorer quality later when perhaps no one would notice that the quality was low. Third, His mother gives some very good advice. Advice that resulted in an answer to the problem.
“Whatever, He says to you, do it.” That was excellent advice. She trusted He could do what needed to be done. She also knew that to fill the need of the hour, they needed to do whatever He said to do. In other words. Follow orders!
~Thought For Today~
I remember carrying home my report card from school in the 1950’s. On the back were several things that related to my behavior while I was attending school. As my memory recalls one very important one was, readily follows instructions. I always got an “S” for satisfactory. Not following instructions at school would cause serious problems for me when I arrived home. No tolerance for not doing what I was told to do.
We have the book of instruction. Sixty-six books with specific instructions on how to live a life pleasing to God. Just as not following instructions in school resulted in consequences, not following God’s instructions have consequences. A matter of life and death, eternal…life and death.
God is watching. Our christian behavior is very important. We are His representatives. He desires obedience. We excel when we readily follow instructions given to us through God’s Holy Bible. His inspired word.
It is very simple. Just follow His instructions and excel.
One other thing we notice from this scripture is that the servants did nothing until Jesus gave them instruction. Occasionally we get in a hurry and we jump ahead before we have given God time to show up with the specific instructions for the circumstance we find ourselves in. That instruction is in Psalm 46:10: Be still and know that I am God…
~Scripture For Today~
John 2:1-11
2 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; 2 and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus *said to Him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus *said to her, “Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother *said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” 6 Now there were six stone water pots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each. 7 Jesus *said to them, “Fill the water pots with water.” So they filled them up to the brim. 8 And He *said to them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.” So they took it to him. 9 When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter *called the bridegroom, 10 and *said to him, “Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him. ~Prayer For Today~
Hello Father! We desire to do what You say we should do. We stumble occasionally and get a step or two ahead of You. We pray for patience to wait on Your instruction and guidance. We pray that we obey when those instructions come. Forgive us of our sins. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
