Dwelling In The Word

“Many have the word but it dwells in them poorly; it has no power over them.”

-Matthew Henry

Indeed. I have had access to the word since I was a young child. The word with no power over me. It was not until the dark nights in the hospital corridors watching loved ones preparing for their journey with Jesus,  that the word began to have power over me. I knew many verses. Those that made the top one-hundred favorite but it was the little verses that are tucked away. Precious treasures that must be unwrapped like a gift at Christmas. Oh! The wonder found in the word. Words that appear just when you need them! Right in the middle of our mess…our storm.

We are seeing evidence of a world and a country that has become unaffected by what the word has to say. Do not fear, there are millions perhaps billions the world over who have received and dwell in the gift known as The Holy Bible. We dear believers are not alone.

To dwell is to lodge, abide, settle, sojourn and rest. Have you dwelled in the word like that? Have you found a secret verse meant just for you? That time when tears fell like torrential floods. When goodbye was something you were sure that you could not survive? When the trust you put in someone was broken, nearly crushing your ability to trust again. When your words hurt and crushed the spirit of someone dear? Those are the times when God will grab our eyes and put them smack dab on the words that comfort a broken, grieving and fearful heart.

God has never moved my Bible from the shelf to my lap and thumbed through it for me. He has prepared the wisdom but He needs me to be the vehicle to open it. To seek Him. To dwell with Him in the word.

Thought For Today:
It may take awhile before you are able to have the words with you before the storm comes. I have tried both ways. I prefer daily time to soak up what God needs me to know each day. We experience different things. One day at a time. So helpful to be in the word daily and at the first sign of trouble, pause…and abide in the word. Rest.

Scripture For Today:
Matthew 4:4
4 But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. (NKT)

Prayer For Today:
Hello Father!
We pray that we make Your word a part of every day. Thank You for providing the answers for everything under the sun that we may experience in this life. Thank You for being there, waiting…when circumstances take us to our knees and we feel the world has turned away. Forgive us our sins. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
