Fragrance of the Fields

The first snow of 2015 is falling. It is beautiful. I know there are “winter people” who love snowfall. I am one of the “spring people.” I am already longing to smell the blended fragrance and see the variety of colors in the beautiful flowers of spring and summer.

Our scripture is part of the Sermon on the Mount.  Is it possible there were flowers all around them as they sat on the mount by the Sea of Galilee? Perhaps, it was a display of colorful beauty and fragrance similar to our Texas Bluebonnets. Scripture doesn’t state that, but my mind wonders what Jesus may have been looking at, when He spoke these words.  Jesus says “consider the lilies of the field, they are more beautifully arrayed than King Soloman.” That is quite a comparison considering the wealth of the King.  I believe He was including all flowers of creation when He spoke this parable.  Flowers do not toil as men in the field or spin as the women. God made provision for them. They were content in their beauty whether in sunshine or rain.

God desires to care for us in that way. He does not want us worrying about the needs we have.  What about tomorrow Lord? Tomorrow may not come, so losing the blessings of the day we are in, by worrying about tomorrow…is wasted time. Jesus directs our attention to the fields of flowers. As I studied this scripture two characteristics of flowers came to mind. Their fragrance and beauty.

Thought For Today:

God will take care of the needs of His children. We all have wants that we may or may never attain. But if He is attentive to the needs required by the simplest of creation, we can expect Him to do the same for His own children. Note that they are field flowers. They are not those in the beds around a home with a caretaker watering and pruning daily.  No these are growing solely at the will of the Father, depending on Him for water and care.  They will bloom and fade away and yet they are beautifully arrayed in color and fragrance.

Shouldn’t the believer be colored with the beauty and fragrance of Christ? It is a spirit of light that comes from the inside.  That light comes through your eyes, your smile, your kindness, your compassion, your love for others. It is beautiful color to those who encounter you in their day. Have you ever been in the presence of someone so in love with Jesus that when they enter a room, the light and fragrance of Christ comes with them? I know people like that.  You just want to stand close and take onto yourself, what you see in them. Part of your witness is how you withstand the breeze and rains of life while in the fields. How you continue to give off the fragrance of Jesus no matter what You are dealing with. You are at peace because you know that your caretaker sees you there in the field. He wants us to rest there, not only like the lilies of the summer fields but also like the pansies peeking through the snow.  The stress of winter temps and snow do not deter them. Their little smiling faces do their best work in the snow when other flowers are freezing.

Scripture For Today:

Matthew 6:28-30

28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? (NKJV)

2 Corinthians 2:15

15 For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. (NKJV)

Prayer For Today:

Hello Father! Thank You that You care for us! We desire to release our worries and anxiety to Your care, daily. We pray that we emit the fragrance of Your love and care and the forgiveness and grace of Jesus wherever we go, and in whatever times we find ourselves.  Forgive us of our sins. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
