He was God who became man. He came to save the lost. It is the last week of the ministry of Jesus on the earth. It is one week before His resurrection from the tomb.
He sent two of His disciples to Bethphage to secure the unbroken colt of a donkey. It is the fulfillment of the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9.
As He approaches Jerusalem he wept over them. Though they were preparing to celebrate, they really did not understand who He was.
They threw their cloaks and palm branches on the road before Him. Treatment for royalty. They were waving palm branches on this, the first, “Palm Sunday.” They shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David” as He passed by. Their words fulfilled the prophecy of Psalm 118:25-26.
These same participants welcoming Jesus with shouts, their cloaks and waving Palm branches would in just five days be screaming, “Crucify Him.” But today they celebrate His arrival in Jerusalem.
Scripture mentions the waving of palms once again…
Revelation 7:9
9 After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” 11 All the angels stood around the throne and the elders and the four living creatures, and fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, (NKJV)
Thought For Today:
At some point we were or will be approached by Jesus through a pastor, parent, friend or stranger trying to introduce us to the One who died to save us from our sins. There are those who will recognize and acknowledge Him on that first meeting. There are also those who will let Him pass by. We never know when He has passed our way for the last time. It is an acquaintance so important that eternity rests on the relationship. Have you met Him?
Scripture For Today:
Zechariah 9:9
9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey. (NKJV)
John 12:12-13
12 The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out: “Hosanna! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ The King of Israel!” (NKJV)
Psalm 118:25-26
M26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! We have blessed you from the house of the Lord. (NKJV)
Luke 19:41-47
41 Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, 44 and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.” (NKJV)
Philippians 2:9-11
9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (NKJV)
Prayer For Today:
Hello Father! We know that so many have yet to acknowledge Your Son, Jesus. We pray that all would come to salvation through grace that only He can give. Thank You for sending Jesus through the streets that Palm Sunday all those years ago. The beginning of Your plan of salvation for a lost world. Forgive us of our sins. In Jesus name. Amen.
