There is no mention in scripture of what Jesus and His disciples did on this day. Some writers refer to it as “Silent Wednesday.” He made His first entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. Each day He walked into Jerusalem and each night He would return to Bethany. This day perhaps He stayed in Bethany. There is no scriptural evidence that He went to Jerusalem as the three previous days.
Bethany is within two miles of Jerusalem. It is also the home of Lazarus and his sisters, Mary and Martha. He had been entertained not many days before in their home. They were His friends. He raised Lazarus from the tomb of death. He wept over the death of his friend and then called him out to live again.
Did these dear friends and the disciples understand this day would be their last quiet day with Him before Passover? Things would move pretty quickly after the last meal with His disciples. Would they have done anything differently? Would they wish they had said more to Him? Expressed their deep love for the Master and gratitude for all He taught them? Or would it just be another, business as usual day? We have no way of knowing.
Perhaps it was the will of His Father that He relax and look into the faces of these “followers.” His death was going to bring them eternal life. I can’t help but wonder if He looked at Lazarus and thought that the next death that comes to Lazarus would bring Him home…His home.
Thought For Today:
There is a bit of Godly wisdom in this quiet day. When we are pressed on every side with decisions, problems, worries and fears, He desires that we “be still” and know that He is God. Tomorrow is Thursday. The cross approaches.
Psalm 46:10-11
10 “Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.” 11 The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress. (NKJV)
Prayer For Today:
Hello Father! We wonder what Jesus did on this quiet day before His suffering would begin. But perhaps You have shown us exactly how we should handle this day in the life of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Prepare us.May we in each our own way, show reverence, honor, and respect for who Jesus is and what He did for us so long ago. After all He is here with us. Thank You Abba Father! Forgive us of our sins. In the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
